Founder Red Flags

Red flags rarely show up as one dramatic moment. They show up early, small, and easy to explain away — which is exactly why they're worth naming clearly.

All talk, no shipping. Big plans and constant reframing of the idea, with nothing actually built, is one of the most reliable predictors that a partnership will stall the same way.

Disappearing for days without explanation. How someone communicates under normal conditions is the best version of them you'll see — it only gets harder once real pressure shows up.

A vision that shifts every time the market does. Some adaptation is healthy; a founder who reinvents the entire idea every few weeks is optimizing for excitement, not for finishing something.

Avoiding specifics about money, equity, or past partnerships. Vagueness about the boring parts is rarely an oversight — it's usually a sign those conversations haven't gone well before.

Dismissing a trial run as unnecessary. Someone confident in the partnership should welcome a small test before committing fully. Resistance to that test is itself worth noticing.

None of these are automatic disqualifiers on their own, but more than one together is worth slowing down for — a partnership is far easier to walk away from before it starts than after.
